This walk takes you past Pink Triangle Plaza, Harvey Milk Plaza, the Castro Theatre, the GLBT Historical Society Museum, Most Holy Redeemer Church, the Alfred E. Clarke Mansion, Toad Hall, Castro Camera, Mission Dolores Park, Hartford Street Zen Center, Beaux and Twin Peaks Tavern, with the story of each place along the way.
Is there a scavenger hunt in the Castro District?
Yes. This is a self-guided walk played on your phone. The app leads you from stop to stop, tells the history of the Castro from pre-colonial times through the 1970s gay rights movement and the HIV/AIDS crisis, and sets a puzzle at each place using what is in front of you.
Do I need a tour guide or a booked time slot?
No. There is no guide and no group to join, so you can start whenever you like during the day. The app does the guiding, and you can pause the game and carry on later if you want a coffee or a longer look somewhere.
Where does the walk start and finish, and how long does it take?
It is a loop of 3.9 km that starts at Pink Triangle Plaza and finishes at Twin Peaks Tavern, back where you began. Most players take just over two hours, walking and puzzles included, and it is best done in daylight.
