What is the Belém map hunt?
It is a self-guided treasure hunt played on your phone through Belém. The app leads you from stop to stop, tells the story of the Portuguese Discoveries era and sets a puzzle at each place, including Belém Tower, Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the Rose Compass, Jerónimos Monastery and Pastéis de Belém.
How does the ticket work, and do we need to book a time slot?
One ticket covers your whole group, so you can play together without each person buying their own. There is no time slot to book and no guide to meet. Start whenever you like, and if you need a break, pause the game and continue later from where you stopped.
Where does it start and how long does it take?
The route starts and finishes at Belém Tower, so you end up back where you began. The walk covers about 3.5 km and takes around two hours, passing MAAT, the river station, Jerónimos Monastery and the Monument to the Discoveries. Allow extra time if you stop for pastries or coffee.
Is it good for kids?
It is recommended for families. Children who enjoy solving puzzles based on what is in front of them, and who can comfortably walk about 3.5 km over roughly two hours, tend to suit it best. Since you can pause at any point, it is easy to fit in snack breaks along the way.
Is it outdoors, and when is the best time to play?
The route is an outdoor walk along the river and through the streets of Belém, and it is best played during the day. If the weather turns, you can pause the game, sit out a shower at one of the cafés on the route, and pick up again afterwards.
