Sobre Hans Christian Andersen Monument
The Hans Christian Andersen Monument is a bronze statue in Lincoln Park, Chicago, honoring the Danish author of fairy tales such as The Ugly Duckling. It shows the writer seated with an open book and a duck at his feet, and it is a quiet, free stop on the park's Stockton Drive.
The story behind it
Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark, in 1805 and became one of the best-loved storytellers in the world. Chicago had a large Scandinavian community in the 19th century, and the statue grew out of that heritage. It was made by Johannes Gelert, a Danish-born sculptor who worked in Chicago, and it was unveiled in Lincoln Park in 1896.
Rather than a stiff portrait, Gelert shows Andersen as a storyteller. He sits relaxed with a book in hand, and the duck beside him recalls The Ugly Duckling, one of his most famous tales. The monument still draws families who come to read or just to sit beside him.
What to look for
- Look at the open book in Andersen's hand, which suggests he has just paused mid-story.
- Find the duck at his feet, a nod to The Ugly Duckling and a favorite spot for children to point at.
- Notice the relaxed seated pose, which makes the figure feel more like a friendly reader than a formal memorial.
- Read the lettering on the base, then look around at the trees and paths that give the statue a calm, park-bench setting.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on 10 to 15 minutes for the statue itself, longer if you pair it with a stroll through the park.
- It stands outdoors in a public park, so you can see it any time of year, but soft morning or late afternoon light is best for photos.
- It is a short walk from Cafe Brauer and the Lincoln Park Conservatory, so it fits easily into a wider afternoon in this part of the park. Check current opening hours for those buildings.
- Bring a book of fairy tales if you travel with kids. The spot invites a short reading break.
