Budapest 1896. The Nameless Hand

In 1894 the National Archives gave an archivist one job: confirm that the history Hungary was about to carve in stone was true. He worked two years. His notebook was filed and never opened.

You have it now. Walk Andrássy út end to end, checking what the city carved against what he found. Every answer is on a wall, a plinth or a roof in front of you.

It ends at a bronze figure whose face nobody has ever seen.

8 stops · 1 h 50 · 3.5 km · flat, outdoors, no tickets.

A missão: A tua história em Budapest

In 1894 the National Archives hired Ágoston Rédey to do one quiet job: check the sources.

Hungary was about to celebrate its thousandth birthday. Monuments were being cast, a boulevard was being finished, a basilica was rising to an exact height. Somebody had to confirm that the history being carved into all of it was true.

Rédey worked for two years. His last notebook was handed in, filed, and never opened again.

You have it now.

Walk his route up Andrássy út, read what the city carved, and check it against what he found. Every answer is on a wall, a plinth or a roof in front of you.

Start at the basilica. Rédey started there too, and he started with a name.
