Sobre Linn Park
Linn Park is a public park in downtown Birmingham, Alabama, set beside the city's main civic buildings at 2000 7th Pl NW. It is named for Charles Linn, a Finnish-born riverboat captain who became one of the city's early bankers, and it has long served as the green heart of the government district. Its history also reflects the wider story of how Birmingham has reckoned with its past.
The story behind it
The park takes its name from Charles Linn, who came to Alabama as a riverboat captain and went on to found the First National Bank of Birmingham in the early years of the city. Birmingham itself was founded in 1871, and this open ground in the centre of downtown has been a place for gatherings, rest and public events ever since.
In 2020, during nationwide protests, a Confederate monument that had stood in the park for more than a century was pulled down and the city removed what remained. The moment became part of the park's recent history and a reminder that public spaces in Birmingham are still being debated and reshaped.
What to look for
- The civic buildings that surround the park, including Birmingham City Hall and the Jefferson County Courthouse, show how closely the green space is tied to the city's government.
- The Birmingham Museum of Art sits right next to the park, so you can pair a walk under the trees with a look at its free-standing exterior and entrance.
- The mature trees and open lawns make a rare shaded pause in a downtown of offices and streets.
- The area where the Confederate monument once stood is a quiet marker of the 2020 events and of the city's ongoing conversation about memory.
Tips for your visit
- Plan 20 to 30 minutes for the park itself, longer if you add the museum next door.
- Morning or late afternoon light is gentler, and the park is calmer outside weekday working hours.
- The Civil Rights District, including Kelly Ingram Park, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the 16th Street Baptist Church, is a short walk away, so it makes sense to combine them.
- The park is an open public space, so you can wander in without going through an entrance. Check current opening hours for the museum and civic buildings if you want to go inside.
