Adults who love ghost stories and Austin's darker history, especially couples and friends out downtown after dark, will follow a grieving sibling's story past the Driskill Hotel, the Millett Opera House and two murder sites, solving puzzles along the way. Allow about 100 minutes for the 3 km walk. Anyone wanting a guide cracking jokes and taking questions, or a light outing for children, should choose something else.

Can we do this in Austin today without booking a time?
Yes. There is no time slot to book, no group to join and no guide to meet. You start whenever you like from your phone. The story is best played at night, so an evening walk downtown works well, and you can pause and pick it up again later.
Where does the walk start and finish, and how long does it take?
It starts at the Texas State Capitol Building and finishes at the Hofheintz-Reissig Store (Moonshine Grill), so it does not return to the start. The route covers about 3 km, and most players take around 100 minutes including walking and puzzles.
Is it suitable for children?
It is written for adults. The story deals with grief and the voices of the dead, and the route includes the Eula Phillips and Mary Ramey murder sites. It is tagged horror and haunts and is best played at night, so families with young children may prefer a lighter quest.
Can we play as a group?
Yes. One ticket covers the whole group playing together on the walk, so couples and groups of friends can follow the story and solve the puzzles side by side. Everyone simply walks the route together from the Capitol.
Do we need to go inside the hotels and other buildings?
No. Entering the places is not part of the experience. Puzzles are solved from the street using what is in front of you, and since it is best at night, a phone flashlight helps if you need to spot a clue in the dark.

Yes. In Ghosts of Austin, you wander Austin’s historic 7th Street and haunted landmarks after dusk, solving puzzles while memories and ghost stories swirl. It’s emotional, a little eerie, and excellent for sharing a quiet moment with someone special.
Is this quest okay if I’m travelling with teens or older kids?
Definitely. The ghost stories are intense but not horrifying; the puzzles are clever. Places like the Texas State Capitol & Governor’s Mansion look majestic at night and can be awe-inspiring. Just take breaks, maybe grab tacos in between clues.
