Is this a guided spy tour of Vienna?
No, it is self-guided and played on your phone. The app leads you from place to place, tells the story of each stop and sets a puzzle in what is in front of you. You play a recruit following encrypted clues through the city centre to become a Protector of Vienna.
Is this a spy museum visit?
No. This is an outdoor walk of about 5.2 km through central Vienna, not a museum visit. The clues are set near landmarks such as the Albertina, Josephsplatz and the Austrian National Library, the Kapuzinerkirche and the Burgtheater, with puzzles solved from what you see on the street.
Where does the quest start and which places does it visit?
It starts and finishes at the Rathaus, the City Hall. On the way you visit Karlskirche, the Vienna State Opera, the Maria Theresa statue, the Hofburg with the Prince Eugene statue and the Swiss Gate, Stephansdom, the Plague Column, Michaelerplatz, the Volksgarten and the Burgtheater.
Does the route pass St. Stephen's Cathedral?
Yes. Stephansdom is one of the stops, and the app tells its story and sets a puzzle there. From the cathedral the trail continues to the Plague Column, also called the Column of the Trinity, and on towards Michaelerplatz and the Hofburg Palace.
How long does it take, and do we need to book a time?
Plan on about two hours for the 5.2 km loop, and it is best played during the day. There is no set time to book: start whenever you like, with no group or guide to meet, and pause to continue later if you stop for a coffee.
