Is this a game you play in Vatican City?
Yes. It starts at the "Leone" sundial disk by the obelisk in St. Peter's Square, and the route includes Porta Sant'Anna, Porta Angelica and the centre of the colonnade before crossing into central Rome. You play outdoors on your phone, reading clues from the stone around you.
How does this Rome escape game work, and how long does it take?
You follow Pope Leo as he tries to cross a captured city, solving puzzles at each stop: Ponte Sant'Angelo, Castel Sant'Angelo, Piazza Navona, Palazzo Montecitorio, the Mausoleum of Augustus and Piazza del Popolo among them. Allow about 2.5 hours for 4.4 km, and pause whenever you like to continue later.
Is it good for kids?
It is tagged family friendly and a family favourite, and the clues are found in carvings and monuments, which suits school-age children who enjoy a chase story. The walk is 4.4 km with plenty of sun, so bring hats, sunscreen and enough water, and take breaks when needed.
