Learn how Raphael rose to fame, explore the fall of paganism and the rise of Christianity, and uncover the scandalous history of a notorious Pope. Marvel at renowned paintings, statues, and tapestries, all while solving a thrilling mystery.

You are Detective Riddle, a brilliant but eccentric investigator called back to the Vatican to crack a new lead on an art crime. Your target? Cecil Hastings II, an infamous pensioner-turned-artist bent on “improving” the world’s best art. It’s up to you to stop his revenge plot before he strikes again.

Perfect for art lovers, history buffs, and mystery enthusiasts, this self-guided tour lets you explore the Vatican’s rich history and masterpieces while solving puzzles at your own pace.

Is dit iets voor jullie?

Voor wie het is

Couples who love art history and families who want their children engaged play Detective Riddle across 15 stops, from the Laocoön to the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel, in about 2.5 hours. It suits Vatican Museums visitors who would rather set their own pace than follow a timed guided group. Anyone who wants a live guide to question, or finds 4.3 km on foot through the galleries too far, should pick something shorter.

Veelgestelde vragen

Where does the Vatican Museums quest start and finish?
You start in the Pine Cone Courtyard and finish in the Sistine Chapel. It is not a loop. In between, the route passes the Octagonal Court, the Gallery of the Candelabra, the Gallery of Tapestries, the Gallery of Maps, the Raphael Rooms and the Borgia Apartments.
How long does it take?
Most players take about 2.5 hours, including walking and solving the puzzles, and cover around 4.3 km. You can pause the quest and continue later, so there is no need to rush through any room.
Does the route include the Gallery of Maps?
Yes. The Gallery of Maps is a stop on the route, with a puzzle built around the Map of Sicily. You reach it after the Gallery of Tapestries and before the Room of the Immaculate Conception and the Raphael Rooms.
Where is the Sistine Chapel on the route?
The Sistine Chapel is the final stop. You reach it after the three Raphael Rooms (Constantine, Heliodorus and Signatura) and the Borgia Apartments, so the quest's mystery ends in the chapel itself.
Is it good for kids, and can we play as a group?
Yes. It is recommended for families and works best for school-age children who can follow a detective story and walk about 4.3 km. The quest is free to play, so families, couples and friends can all play together. Start any time, with no group to join.
