The seat of the Government is an imposing building in any country, but the Catalans went above and beyond when they built this palace. Palau de la Generalitat, the symbol of democracy in Catalonia, hides an impressive and tumultuous history. Starting from the 13th century, when the Catalan Assembly was formed (the first Parliament in Europe), the palace witnessed many revolutions, changes of political power, as well as victories and defeats. For example, in 1714 the city fell under the attack of Philip V, king of Spain; at the beginning of the 20th century, it was reinstated but suppressed again by General Franco in 1939 with many years being under Spanish influence. Finally, 1977 was a lucky year for Catalonia as democracy was re-established in Spain, and so were the Catalans.
