À propos King William River Park

King William River Park is a small public green space on the San Antonio River in the King William district, just south of downtown San Antonio. It sits on a stretch of river tied to the city's milling history, to its worst flood and to the Victorian neighborhood around it.

The story behind it

The river here was once a working millrace. Carl Hilmar Guenther, a German-trained millwright, began milling flour on the San Antonio River in 1859. In 1868 he built a second dam and mill at this spot, upstream and closer to town. It was his first mill driven by a water turbine. Around 1900 the family moved all its milling to the downstream site, which still operates as Pioneer Flour Mills.

Across the river stood the U.S. Arsenal, established in 1858. The Confederacy seized it during the Civil War, and its grounds are now the headquarters of the H-E-B supermarket chain. In September 1921 the river and its creeks burst their banks in one of the deadliest floods in the city's history. The city then set out to tame the river, and in 1926 the old mill was torn down and its dam removed to widen the channel.

What to look for

  • Look along the east bank for what remains of the old mill's foundations, the last trace of a building the river outlasted.
  • Notice how wide and straight the channel is here, a result of the flood-control work that followed 1921.
  • Look across the water toward the former arsenal grounds, now the H-E-B headquarters, and think about how much the far bank has changed.
  • Walk a block or two into the King William district to see the Victorian-era houses that give the neighborhood its character.

Tips for your visit

  • Plan on 20 to 30 minutes for the park itself, longer if you combine it with a stroll through the surrounding streets.
  • Morning and late afternoon are the most comfortable times for walking in San Antonio, especially in the warmer months.
  • Pioneer Flour Mills, the Guenther family's surviving mill, is a short walk downstream, so the two stories fit well into one outing.
  • It is an outdoor riverside space, so there is nothing to go inside. Check current opening hours for any nearby museums or restaurants you want to visit.
