À propos Moore Square

Moore Square is a public park in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, and one of the open squares set out in the city's original 1792 plan. It matters twice over: as part of the founding layout of the capital, and as the edge of East Hargett Street, once known as Raleigh's "Black Main Street."

The story behind it

When Raleigh was planned in 1792, the area around Moore Square began as a residential neighbourhood. Over the following decades it grew into the main business district of the city. The square is named for Alfred Moore, a North Carolinian who served as a justice of the US Supreme Court.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, East Hargett Street, on the square's edge, became the commercial heart of Black Raleigh. It held more African American-owned businesses than anywhere else in the city, with shops, offices and professional practices along the sidewalks. Among them was the medical office of Dr. Manassa Thomas Pope, one of the city's prominent Black citizens. Many of the old storefronts are gone or changed, but the street still carries that history. In 1983 the area was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Moore Square Historic District.

What to look for

  • Stand at the corner of East Hargett Street and South Blount Street and picture the doctors, shopkeepers and business owners who once filled this block.
  • Notice how the square sits as an open green space inside the street grid, a reminder of how deliberately Raleigh was laid out in 1792.
  • Look at the buildings around the park edge, where older storefronts stand beside newer ones, and read the street as layers of different decades.
  • Walk the paths under the mature trees in the park and notice how the square works as a pause in the middle of downtown.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 15 to 30 minutes for the square itself, longer if you want to stroll the surrounding blocks.
  • It is an open public park, so you can walk through it at your own pace. Check current opening hours for any nearby museums, shops or restaurants you plan to enter.
  • Morning and late afternoon are comfortable times for a walk, with softer light and fewer midday crowds.
  • Downtown Raleigh is compact, so the square is easy to combine with City Market and other nearby streets on foot.
