À propos Penn's Landing

Penn's Landing is a riverfront park on the Delaware River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the eastern edge of Old City. It is named for William Penn, founder of the colony, and it is where the city first met the water that made it a port. Today it is a place for river views, museums, and events, with early Philadelphia history right beneath your feet.

The story behind it

Before Philadelphia had streets and brick houses, the riverbank was where newcomers first looked for shelter. Early settlers, many of them Quakers, arrived on the shore of the Delaware, which the Lenape called the Lenapewihittuk, and had almost nothing ready for them. Some dug homes straight into the bank and roofed them with branches and bark, a quick way to survive the first winters.

These riverbank dugouts became known as the caves of Philadelphia. Once families moved on to better housing, some of the caves were taken over for drinking and other rowdy activity, which worried the colony's leaders. William Penn responded with a proclamation about the caves, ordering certain people out of them. The waterfront has changed enormously since then, but this is where the city's earliest, roughest chapter played out.

What to look for

  • The wide view across the Delaware toward Camden, which shows why this stretch of shore became the heart of a trading port.
  • The Benjamin Franklin Bridge rising to the north, a landmark that frames the skyline from the waterfront.
  • The Independence Seaport Museum, which tells the story of the river, the port, and the ships that connected Philadelphia to the world.
  • The line of the old riverbank itself, a reminder that the first settlers dug their homes into the slope here before the city grew inland.

Tips for your visit

  • Plan about 30 to 60 minutes for the waterfront itself, longer if you visit the museum or catch an event. Check current opening hours for any attraction.
  • Late afternoon and early evening are pleasant, with softer light on the river and cooler air in summer.
  • The park is outdoors and open to walk through. Seasonal attractions and events change from year to year, so check the current schedule before you go.
  • Old City is close by, so it is easy to combine the waterfront with a walk through the historic streets just inland.
