À propos La Llotja

La Llotja is a late Gothic merchants' exchange on the waterfront of Palma, on the island of Mallorca. It was built in the 15th century to designs by Guillem Sagrera, and it is one of the best examples of late Gothic civil architecture in the city. It still stands a short walk from the harbour that once made it necessary.

The story behind it

La Llotja was raised between 1420 and 1452 by Guillem Sagrera, the celebrated Mallorcan architect who also designed the chapter house of Palma's cathedral and worked on buildings elsewhere in the Crown of Aragon. It was meant as a meeting place for merchants and traders, which explains its position close to the port, where Mallorca's sea trade came and went.

As trade declined, the building found other uses over the centuries. Today it is mostly used as a space for exhibitions. Above the entrance, a guardian angel holds a scroll that names a defender of merchants, a reminder of the people the building was made to serve.

What to look for

  • The pointed arches and the stone tracery of the tall windows show the late Gothic style at its most refined.
  • The guardian angel with a scroll over the entrance carries a message of protection for the merchants who once did business here.
  • The crenellated roofline and the corner towers give a civic building the look of a small fortress.
  • If the doors are open for an exhibition, look at the slender columns inside, which rise to the vaulted ceiling like palm trunks.

Tips for your visit

  • The outside is worth a slow ten or fifteen minutes. If you go in for an exhibition, allow a little longer, and check current opening hours first because access depends on what is on.
  • Light is softest in the morning and in the late afternoon, when the golden stone glows and the square is calmer.
  • The cathedral, the harbour promenade and the old town lanes are all within walking distance, so it fits easily into a longer stroll.
  • The streets around La Llotja are lined with bars and restaurants, which makes it a pleasant place to stop for a drink after your visit.
