À propos Light Meander Sculpture

The Light Meander Sculpture is a public artwork at 101 Demonbreun St in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, whose flowing curves are meant to echo the winding path of the Cumberland River. It stands beside the Ascend Amphitheater and gives a short, easy stop on the way to the riverfront.

The story behind it

The sculpture was installed in 2015. Its curves represent the meandering course of the Cumberland River, which rises in southeastern Kentucky, crosses northern Tennessee, then returns to western Kentucky and ends at the Ohio River. Nashville grew up on this river, so the artwork is a nod to the water that shaped the city.

The street name has a story of its own. Demonbreun (pronounced de MON bree-un) honors Timothy Demonbreun, a French-Canadian fur trader who came to the Nashville area in the 18th century and is often called the First Citizen of Nashville. A rock fissure on the Cumberland shoreline, known as Demonbreun Cave, is linked to him and is thought to have been a place where he sometimes sheltered. Its entrance is now covered with iron bars, so it can be seen but not explored.

What to look for

  • Follow the sweeping curves of the sculpture and picture them as the bends of the Cumberland River on a map.
  • Look beside the sculpture for the Ascend Amphitheater, the outdoor concert venue that opened in 2015, the same year as the artwork.
  • Read the street sign for Demonbreun and try the local pronunciation, de MON bree-un, which trips up many visitors.
  • Look toward the river nearby and think about how the same water links Kentucky and Tennessee.

Tips for your visit

  • The sculpture is outdoors on a public street, so you can see it at any time. A short stop of 10 to 15 minutes is plenty.
  • Pair it with a walk to the Cumberland riverfront and the Ascend Amphitheater, both close by.
  • On concert nights the area around the amphitheater gets busy, so check the venue schedule if you prefer a quieter look.
  • Daylight is best for photos and for noticing the shape of the curves, and the walk is comfortable in any season with the right clothes.
