À propos The Alhambra
The Alhambra is a hilltop palace and fortress complex above the city of Granada in southern Spain, and the finest surviving example of Nasrid architecture in Europe. Built mostly in the 13th and 14th centuries, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited monuments in the country.
The story behind it
The Alhambra sits on Sabika Hill, looking down over Granada. Most of what you see was built under the Nasrid dynasty, the last Muslim rulers on the Iberian Peninsula, who made it a royal residence as well as a fortress. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-Qal'a Al-Hamra, the Red Castle, a nod to the reddish tone of its walls, which glow at sunset.
In 1492 the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, took Granada and ended Muslim rule in Spain. The Alhambra then declined for a long time. Its revival began in the 19th century, helped by writers such as Washington Irving, whose Tales of the Alhambra drew new attention to the place and to its stories.
What to look for
- The reddish walls of the old fortress, which change colour with the light, especially towards sunset.
- The carved stucco, tilework and calligraphy that cover the walls of the Nasrid palaces, among the best examples of Islamic art in Spain.
- The view across the rooftops of Granada from the hill, which shows why this spot was chosen for a fortress.
- The contrast between the Islamic buildings and the later Christian additions made after 1492.
Tips for your visit
- Allow at least half a day if you plan to go inside, as the complex is large and has many parts to explore.
- Entry is controlled and tickets are limited, so check current opening hours and booking rules before you go.
- Early morning and late afternoon are usually calmer, and the evening light is best for the red walls.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as the site is on a hill and involves a lot of walking on uneven paths.
See it on a quest
Medieval Granada: Secrets of Dynasties and Royals is a good way to meet the Alhambra and its surroundings on foot. You reach it as one stop on a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot, so you look at the details rather than just walk past. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
