À propos Byrd Creek Dam and Falls
Byrd Creek Dam and Falls is a Crab Orchard sandstone dam and bridge in Cumberland Mountain State Park, near Crossville, Tennessee. Built in the Depression era by the Civilian Conservation Corps, it holds back Byrd Lake and is the best-known landmark in the park. The creek spills over it in a broad cascade.
The story behind it
The park began in 1934, when land south of Crossville was acquired as part of a New Deal effort tied to the Cumberland Homesteads. The aim was to give a recreation area to roughly 250 families chosen to settle in this thinly populated part of Cumberland County and build a self-sustaining community.
The park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Works Progress Administration and the American Friends Service Committee, and it opened in 1940. Builders used local Crab Orchard sandstone for many of the park's buildings, and the same stone was used for the dam and bridge. The dam is often described as the largest masonry structure the CCC ever built.
What to look for
- The Crab Orchard sandstone itself, with its warm tan and brown tones and hand-laid blocks, which shows the care that went into the work.
- The water spilling over the dam into Byrd Creek below, which looks best after steady rain.
- The bridge deck on top of the dam, which gives a view across Byrd Lake with wooded hills around it.
- The same sandstone in other park buildings nearby, so you can see how the dam fits the park's overall look.
Tips for your visit
- Give yourself 30 to 45 minutes to look at the dam from above and below, and longer if you plan to walk the lakeside paths.
- Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer on the stonework and the park is quieter.
- The dam is outdoors and you can see it from the bridge and the creek side. Check current park rules and conditions before you go.
- The dam sits inside a state park, so you can pair it with a lakeside stroll or a picnic. Wear shoes that cope with damp, uneven ground near the water.
See it on a quest
You can reach the dam on foot as one stop on Conspiracies on Cumberland Mountain, Crossville, a self-guided quest through the area. The app tells you about each place as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look closely at the stonework and the setting instead of just snapping a photo. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no group to join.
