The story behind it

The university began in 1867 as the Illinois Industrial University, a land-grant school meant to teach practical subjects alongside traditional ones. It took the name University of Illinois in 1885. • The Quad is an outdoor space on a public campus, but individual buildings may have limited public access, so check current opening hours before planning to go inside.
