The Stavropoleos Monastery is one of the most beautiful churches in Bucharest, a small and exquisitely detailed building tucked into the heart of the Old Town. The church was founded by Ioannikios Stratonikeas, a Greek monk who had come to Bucharest from Pogoniani. Ioannikios was later elected Metropolitan of Stavropolis (giving the monastery its name) and was buried here after his death in 1742.

The exterior is covered in delicate stone carvings, with vine motifs, rosettes, and religious symbols winding around the arched entrance porch. The interior, though small, is rich with murals and icons.

One of the monastery's most distinctive features is its focus on Byzantine music. The resident choir maintains the largest collection of Byzantine music books in Romania and performs regularly. Stavropoleos Monastery

The museum was founded in 1834, but the current building opened on May 24, 1908. It's named after Grigore Antipa, the renowned Romanian biologist who directed the museum for decades and transformed it into an internationally respected institution.

The museum opened on May 10, 1936, during the reign of King Carol II. The idea was ambitious: to bring the entire diversity of Romanian rural life into a single park. Houses, churches, windmills, barns, and workshops were dismantled in their original villages, transported to Bucharest, and reassembled piece by piece. The collection includes approximately 50,000 everyday objects, from textiles and tools to pottery and furniture.

The structures represent Romania's eight major ethnographic regions, from the wooden churches of Maramures to the whitewashed houses of Wallachia and the fortified homesteads of Transylvania. Walking through the museum is like crossing the entire country in an afternoon.

The museum was a pioneer of the open-air museum concept and has influenced similar projects across Europe. Regular demonstrations of traditional crafts, including weaving, pottery, and wood carving, bring the exhibits to life.
