Meet Robert Burns!, Ayr — Visitor Guide & Things to Do Nearby
À propos Meet Robert Burns!
This spot in Ayr connects you to the birthplace story of Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, who was born on January 25, 1759, in a small clay and thatch cottage in Alloway, just outside Ayr.
The cottage was built by Burns's father, William Burnes, in 1757. It had just four rooms, and the family lived side by side with their farm animals. Young Robert received his earliest education in the family kitchen. He lived in the cottage until the age of seven before the family moved to a larger farm.
After Burns died in 1796, the cottage had an unexpected second life as a pub, run by a Mr Goudie. It became so popular with visitors that it had to be extended to accommodate the crowds. By 1881, the Burns Monument Trust converted it back to resemble its appearance during the poet's lifetime.
Today, the cottage is part of the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, managed by the National Trust for Scotland. Ayr and the surrounding area are deeply shaped by Burns's legacy, from the Auld Brig he wrote about to the fields he ploughed.
If you're on a Questo quest through Ayr, the story of Burns is woven into every corner of this town, and you might find yourself solving a riddle inspired by the poet himself.
