Acerca de Foundation Park

Foundation Park is a small, pedestrian-only park on Gloucester Walk in The Rocks, Sydney, set against a wall of the sandstone that gave the neighbourhood its name. It holds the exposed remains of old terrace houses, which makes it a quiet, tangible glimpse of how crowded and hard life was in early Sydney.

The story behind it

A long sandstone bluff runs through The Rocks, splitting the peninsula into upper and lower levels, and Gloucester Walk follows the higher ground. People built wherever the ledges allowed, so houses, yards and stables were squeezed between cliff and street. In the nineteenth century the area had a rough reputation, and a gang known as the Rocks Push was part of it. When bubonic plague broke out in Sydney in 1900, the government took control of the area, inspected buildings and demolished many homes.

The park also belongs to a later chapter. In the early 1970s The Rocks faced large-scale redevelopment, and local residents joined the Builders Labourers Federation, led by Jack Mundey, in the Green Bans movement that helped save much of the area's heritage. What you see here today, the laid-open footings of terrace houses next to the raw rock, is a small survivor of that story.

What to look for

  • The bare sandstone face behind the park shows the natural cliff that shaped how The Rocks was built.
  • The exposed remains of the terrace houses, including fireplaces, thresholds and stair footings, show how closely homes were fitted against the rock.
  • The contrast between the quiet, car-free park and the busy streets nearby makes it easy to picture how tightly packed the area once was.
  • The way Gloucester Walk runs along the top of the bluff shows the two-level layout of the peninsula.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 10 to 15 minutes for the park itself, longer if you read the surroundings closely and take photographs.
  • Go in the morning or late afternoon for softer light on the sandstone and fewer people on the lanes.
  • It is an open outdoor space you walk through, so there is nothing to go inside. Check for any local notices if you plan a special visit.
  • Combine it with a wander through the nearby lanes and streets of The Rocks, which are all close on foot.
