Acerca de Fort Canning Park
Fort Canning Park is a hilltop park in the centre of Singapore, set on the rise the Malays called Bukit Larangan, or Forbidden Hill. It has served as a royal ground in legend, a colonial residence and fort, and a wartime command post, and today it is a green, shaded walk with history on every side.
The story behind it
Malay tradition ties the hill to the old rulers of Singapura in the 14th century, which is why it was long treated as a place apart. In 1822 Stamford Raffles chose it as the site for his residence, and the hill became the seat of colonial government. The fort that gave the park its name was later named after Viscount Canning, a Governor-General of India. In the Second World War an underground command centre here, now known as the Battle Box, was used during the final days of the fight for Singapore in 1942.
The lower slopes toward Armenian Street tell a quieter story. A European cemetery was laid out there in the 1820s and used until 1865. The graves were later cleared, and some memorial plaques were set into the cemetery wall, where you can still read them. Nearby, 39 Armenian Street holds the building that now houses the Peranakan Museum. It was designed in 1910 by the Municipal Engineer's Office and finished in 1912 as the Tao Nan School, founded in 1906 by Hokkien community leaders. Its mix of Neoclassical columns and a room plan around a central hall suits the blended Peranakan culture the museum now explores. The museum reopened in 2023 after a long renovation.
What to look for
- The memorial plaques set into the old cemetery wall, which preserve names from the early colonial years after the graves themselves were cleared.
- The surviving gateway of the fort, a reminder that this peaceful park was once a defended position above the town.
- The Neoclassical facade of the former Tao Nan School on Armenian Street, with its Corinthian columns and symmetrical front.
- The shaded paths and old trees on the slopes, which show why the hill felt set apart from the busy streets below.
Tips for your visit
- Allow one to two hours for the park, longer if you also visit the Battle Box or the Peranakan Museum. Check current opening hours and entry rules for both.
- Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the climb is cooler and the light is soft under the trees.
- Walking the park itself is straightforward, but the slopes and steps can be humid, so bring water.
- The Armenian Church and the streets around Armenian Street are close by, so plan to combine them in one outing.
