Acerca de Boat Quay

Boat Quay is a historic stretch of the Singapore River in central Singapore, lined with narrow 19th-century shophouses that now hold restaurants and bars. It was once the busiest part of the river's trading waterfront, and today it sits right under the towers of the financial district, so old and new stand side by side.

The story behind it

After Singapore became a trading port in the early 19th century, the river became its main working artery. Boats carried goods between the ships in the harbour and the warehouses along the banks, and Boat Quay was one of the busiest spots on that stretch. The shophouses along it combined a business on the ground floor with living space above. Merchants and workers from many communities passed through here.

The river stopped being a working waterway after a major clean-up in the 1980s, and the old buildings were restored and given new uses. A short walk away, a bronze sculpture called First Generation by Singaporean artist Chong Fah Cheong shows five boys leaping into the river, from a hesitant first step to a full dive. It recalls how local children once swam here, and the title points to the first generation of immigrants whose lives centred on this water.

What to look for

  • Look at the shophouse facades along the quay, with their repeated narrow frontages, shuttered windows and decorated upper floors.
  • Find the five bronze boys of First Generation on the riverbank nearby and follow their poses from the tentative first step to the dive.
  • Notice the contrast across the water, where glass office towers rise directly behind the low rooftops of the old riverfront.
  • Watch the river itself, which was once crowded with working boats and is now calm and lined with walkways.

Tips for your visit

  • Boat Quay is an open riverside promenade, so you can walk along it freely. Restaurants and bars have their own hours, so check current opening hours if you plan to eat.
  • Come in the late afternoon or early evening, when the light is softer, the heat eases and the buildings and towers light up.
  • Allow about 30 to 45 minutes for a stroll and photos, longer if you stop for a meal.
  • Clarke Quay is further upstream along the same river, and the towers of Raffles Place are right behind you, so it is easy to combine with other sights in the central area.
