Acerca de Grand Hotel
The Grand Hotel is a modernist building on Plaça Weyler in the centre of Palma, on the island of Mallorca. It was designed by the Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and opened in 1903 as one of the first luxury hotels on the island. Today it is a cultural venue, and its facade is one of the best places in the old town to see Palma's modernist side.
The story behind it
The Grand Hotel was built at the start of the 20th century, when Mallorca was only beginning to attract international visitors. Its architect, Lluís Domènech i Montaner, is better known for his work in Barcelona, including the Palau de la Música Catalana. Here he designed a hotel meant to rival the grand establishments of mainland Europe. It opened in 1903 and is often described as a forerunner of tourism on the island, welcoming wealthy and well-connected guests from many countries.
The hotel did not last as a hotel. After its years of lodging travellers it closed, and the building later found a new life. Since 1993 it has served as a cultural space for exhibitions, conferences and art, and it is now home to CaixaForum Palma. That change means you can often still see the building as a place for people to visit, not only to admire from the pavement.
What to look for
- The facade is the main attraction, with the decorative detail, ornamental ironwork and sculpted touches typical of Catalan modernism.
- Look up at the upper floors and the roofline, where the building's shape and ornament are easiest to appreciate.
- Notice how the building sits on Plaça Weyler, a busy square where old-town life passes right by its entrance.
- If you go inside, pay attention to how the interior spaces have been adapted for exhibitions while keeping the feel of the original architecture.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 20 minutes to look at the exterior and the square, and more if you plan to visit an exhibition inside.
- Morning or late afternoon light brings out the facade best, and the square is usually quieter earlier in the day.
- It is a short walk from the main streets and squares of Palma's old town, so it combines easily with a stroll through the centre.
- The building is a cultural venue, so check current opening hours and what is on before you go in.
