Acerca de Lonsdale Quay
Lonsdale Quay is a public market and transport hub on the North Vancouver waterfront, at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue on Burrard Inlet. It is where the SeaBus ferry from downtown Vancouver lands, and it is one of the easiest places on the North Shore to combine food, harbour views and a first look at the city.
The story behind it
The quay sits on the shore of Burrard Inlet, a working harbour that shaped North Vancouver from its early days. Ferries have linked the two sides of the inlet for generations, and the SeaBus passenger service, which began in the late 1970s, made the crossing a routine commute as well as a short sightseeing trip.
The market building opened in the mid-1980s and gave the terminal a second life as a gathering place. Buses, ferry passengers, shoppers and diners all meet here, which is why the quay still feels like the front door to North Vancouver rather than just a place to catch a boat.
What to look for
- The view across the water to the downtown Vancouver skyline, best from the outdoor boardwalk beside the market.
- The SeaBus docking and loading, a small harbour ritual that is fun to watch from the terminal edge.
- The working side of the inlet, with tugs, cargo ships and port cranes moving along the shoreline.
- The busy market hall, where food stalls, produce and local makers fill the ground floor.
Tips for your visit
- Give yourself 45 minutes to an hour for the market and waterfront, or longer if you plan to eat here.
- Late afternoon is a pleasant time for the skyline view, and the light on the water is often at its best then.
- Entry to the market and boardwalk is free to walk around, but check current opening hours for individual shops and stalls.
- The Shipyards area and the streets running up Lonsdale Avenue are close by, so it works well as the start of a longer walk.
