Acerca de Federation Square

Federation Square is a public square and cultural precinct in the heart of Melbourne, on the corner of Swanston and Flinders streets, directly opposite Flinders Street Station. Opened in 2002 on a deck built over railway lines, it brings galleries, cafes and a large public screen together in one open space where the city meets.

The story behind it

The square was created to mark the centenary of Australian federation, the moment in 1901 when the separate colonies joined as one nation. The site had long been railway land beside the Yarra River, so the whole precinct was built on a platform above the tracks, linking the city grid to the river for the first time.

The design came out of an international competition and was led by Lab Architecture Studio with Bates Smart. Its angular buildings, clad in sandstone, zinc and glass arranged in triangular panels, divided opinion when they appeared. Over the years the square has become one of Melbourne's main gathering places for events, markets, film and sport on the big screen.

What to look for

  • The sloping plaza paved in warm, ochre-toned sandstone cobbles, which rises gently from the street and makes a natural spot to sit and watch the crowds.
  • The patchwork facades, where triangular panels of glass, zinc and stone form a repeating geometric pattern that changes with the light.
  • The glass-roofed Atrium, a tall angular passage between buildings that is worth stepping into for its structure alone.
  • The view across the road to the clocks and yellow-toned facade of Flinders Street Station, with the spires of St Paul's Cathedral beside the square.

Tips for your visit

  • The open square is a public space you can walk through at any time. Galleries and venues around it have their own hours, so check current opening hours before going in.
  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes to look around the square itself, or longer if you plan to visit the gallery or the moving image centre that sit within it.
  • Early morning is calm and good for photographs, while late afternoon and evening bring more atmosphere, especially when there is an event on.
  • Flinders Street Station, St Paul's Cathedral and the Yarra riverbank are all within a few minutes on foot, so the square works well as a starting point for a wider walk.
