Couples and adult visitors curious about Coimbra's student fado and the Carnation Revolution get a story-led walk from Praça 8 de Maio up past the Sé Velha and the university to the São Sebastião aqueduct and back down, solving puzzles as they go. If you want an evening fado show, a live guide to ask questions, or a flat stroll, this hilly 3.2 km over about 2.5 hours is better skipped.

Is this a fado walk in Coimbra?
Yes, music runs through the story. The walk explores Portugal's modern history, local culture and Coimbra's fado through facts, challenges and a storyline based on real events, with stops such as Tricana de Coimbra and Cantares de Coimbra. It is a self-guided walk with puzzles, not a live fado performance.
Where does the quest start and finish?
It starts at Praça 8 de Maio and finishes at Café Santa Cruz, back where it began, as the route is a loop. On the way it climbs through the old town to the Sé Velha, Paço das Escolas and the Monumental Stairs, reaches the São Sebastião aqueduct, then descends via Largo da Portagem.
How long does it take and how far is the walk?
Most players take around 2.5 hours, including walking and puzzles, over roughly 3.2 km. The terrain is varied with real changes in elevation, so it may not suit people with limited mobility. You can pause the quest and continue later if you need a break.
Is it suitable for children?
It is family friendly for older children who can handle a hilly walk of about 2.5 hours. It is not recommended for young children or elderly people in the heat. Bring a hat, sunscreen and enough water, and keep your phone charged or carry a power bank.
Can we play as a group, and do we need to book a time?
Yes, one ticket covers the whole group playing together. There is no fixed time and no guide to meet: start whenever you like, as the route is open 24/7, though it is better in daylight hours. You can also pause and pick it up again later.
