Acerca de Patriarchal Cathedral, Bucharest

The Patriarchal Cathedral stands at the top of Patriarchy Hill in Bucharest and is the seat of the Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate. Built in the 1650s, it is the spiritual centre of Romanian Orthodoxy and one of the most important churches in the city.

The story behind it

Patriarchy Hill has been a religious site since at least the seventeenth century. The church on its summit was raised in the 1650s, in the days when Wallachia was a principality of its own, and it later became the cathedral of the Romanian Orthodox Church when that church was made a patriarchate in the twentieth century.

The hill and its buildings came through the communist era largely intact, though much of the surrounding city was reshaped by Nicolae Ceaușescu's rebuilding of Bucharest in the 1980s. That is part of the appeal today: a compact ensemble of church buildings on a green rise, with a very different city spread out below it.

The hill also carries a link to older Wallachian symbolism. The eagle with a cross, the heraldic eagle of Wallachia, is the emblem of the old principality and of its rulers, among them Mircea the Elder, who ruled from 1386 to 1418 and was the grandfather of Vlad the Impaler. He is remembered for defending Wallachia against Ottoman expansion.

What to look for

  • The setting on top of the hill, where the church sits above the streets and gives you a sense of how the city once climbed toward it.
  • The cluster of buildings around the cathedral, which together form the administrative and spiritual centre of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
  • The painted icons and decoration inside, if the church is open to visitors when you arrive.
  • The contrast between the old hilltop and the large modern buildings that now dominate parts of the skyline around it.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 30 to 45 minutes to climb the hill, walk around the grounds and look inside if it is open. Check current opening hours before you go.
  • Dress modestly, with covered shoulders and knees, as this is a working place of worship, and be quiet during services.
  • Morning and late afternoon are usually calmer and give softer light for photographs.
  • The hill is a short walk from the Old Town, so it combines easily with a longer stroll through central Bucharest.
