Acerca de Plaça del Rei

Plaça del Rei is a small medieval square in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, enclosed by the buildings of the old royal palace of the counts of Barcelona and the kings of Aragon. It is one of the most atmospheric corners of the city, and it also holds a modern sculpture by the Basque artist Eduardo Chillida.

The story behind it

The square forms the courtyard of the Palau Reial Major, the Grand Royal Palace, a group of historic buildings that housed the counts of Barcelona and later the kings of Aragon. Three main parts surround it: the Palatine Chapel of St. Agatha, built under King James II and dated to 1302; the Saló del Tinell, a great hall raised under King Peter IV between 1359 and 1362; and the Palau del Lloctinent, from 1549, in the age of Charles V.

The square also sits on much older ground. Excavations beneath this part of the old city have uncovered layers of Roman and later remains, which can be explored through the city history museum, MUHBA, whose entrance is here. In the square itself, Chillida's sculpture Topos V adds a modern note. It is often read as an inversion of the space around it, with walls placed in the opposite positions and arches that echo the semicircular arches of Catalan Romanesque architecture. Some see in them a letter B for Barcelona.

What to look for

  • Topos V by Eduardo Chillida, whose raw, heavy forms and curved arches seem to answer the walls and towers of the square.
  • The Gothic bulk of the Saló del Tinell and the Chapel of St. Agatha, which show how a royal residence was assembled over several centuries.
  • The Renaissance-era Palau del Lloctinent, whose later style sets it apart from the medieval buildings beside it.
  • The enclosed shape of the square itself, where the surrounding facades create a quiet, almost stage-like space just off busy streets.

Tips for your visit

  • The square is free to walk into and can be seen in 15 to 20 minutes. Allow longer if you plan to visit the museum, and check current opening hours.
  • Early morning or evening is usually calmer, and the low light is kind to the stone facades.
  • The Cathedral of Barcelona and Plaça de Sant Jaume are a short walk away, so the square fits easily into a wider Gothic Quarter stroll.
  • The ground is paved and fairly level, but the surrounding lanes are narrow and can be crowded in high season.
