Über Wilmington Riverwalk

The Wilmington Riverwalk is the public waterfront path along the Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington, North Carolina, starting near 1 N Water St. It is where the old port city meets its river, with shops, restaurants and views across the water. It also tells a harder story, because the streets behind it were the scene of the 1898 Wilmington coup and massacre.

The story behind it

Wilmington grew up as a river port, and the Cape Fear River is the reason the downtown sits where it does. The Riverwalk follows that working waterfront, so a stroll here is also a stroll along the edge of the city's trading past.

In November 1898 the city was the site of a violent overthrow of its elected, biracial local government. Often described as the only successful coup d'état in American history, it was organised by white Democratic leaders in the months before. On November 10, an armed mob destroyed the office of a Black-owned newspaper and attacked Black neighbourhoods. Estimates of those killed vary widely and the true number is not known. Many Black residents were driven from the city, and discriminatory laws followed. For a long time the events were softened in public memory as a riot, until a state commission published its findings in 2006.

In recent decades Wilmington has also become a major centre for film and television. Fans of the teen drama One Tree Hill know the riverfront as a filming location. The series ran for nine seasons from 2003 to 2012 and was shot mostly in and around Wilmington, including near the battleship USS North Carolina across the river.

What to look for

  • The Cape Fear River itself, wide and busy with boats, and the view across the water to the battleship USS North Carolina.
  • The foot of Market Street, where the main street of downtown runs down to the river and which fans link with One Tree Hill.
  • The historic brick buildings facing the waterfront, now home to shops, galleries and restaurants.
  • Any historical markers you pass, which are worth reading for the story of the 1898 events and the city's recovery of that history.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow an hour or two to stroll the path, longer if you stop to eat or browse the shops on the streets behind it.
  • Walking the Riverwalk does not need a ticket, since it is an open public path.
  • Late afternoon and early evening are pleasant, with softer light on the water and the town lit up as dusk falls.
  • The battleship USS North Carolina is across the river, so check current opening hours if you want to visit it as well.
