Über Logan Circle

Logan Circle is a landscaped traffic circle and park in northwest Washington D.C., where 13th Street, P Street, Rhode Island Avenue and Vermont Avenue meet. A bronze statue of Civil War general John A. Logan stands at its centre, and the circle gives its name to the surrounding neighbourhood, known for its well-kept Victorian row houses.

The story behind it

The circle was laid out in the 19th century as part of the growth of Washington's streets north of downtown, and it was first called Iowa Circle. In 1930 it was renamed to honour John A. Logan, a Union general in the Civil War who later served as a US senator from Illinois. The bronze equestrian statue of Logan, by sculptor Franklin Simmons, was unveiled in 1901.

The houses around the circle went up mostly in the 1870s and 1880s, when wealthy Washingtonians built elaborate homes here. The area later fell on harder times, then recovered from the 1990s onward. Today the streets around the circle are protected as a historic district, which is why so many of the old facades survive.

What to look for

  • The bronze statue of General Logan on horseback, set on a tall pedestal in the middle of the circle.
  • The ring of Victorian houses, with their turrets, bay windows, decorative brickwork and steep roofs, each a little different from its neighbour.
  • The shape of the circle itself, with its trees, lawns and paths, which makes a calm green island in the middle of busy traffic.
  • The mix of old and new on the streets leading away from the circle, where historic townhouses sit beside cafes and restaurants.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the circle and the houses around it, longer if you want to wander the side streets.
  • Soft morning or late afternoon light shows off the brickwork and details of the facades best.
  • The circle is an open public park, so you can walk around it at any time. The houses are private homes, so admire them from the pavement.
  • The 14th Street corridor is close by and has many restaurants, bars and theatres, which makes it easy to combine a visit with a meal.
