Über Meshchiite Tower

The Meshchiite Tower (Meshchiyska kula) is a fortified stone tower in the centre of Vratsa, Bulgaria, and one of the city's best-known landmarks. Built in the Ottoman era as a defensive and residential tower, it was later given a clock, which still keeps time today.

The story behind it

Vratsa lay under Ottoman rule for centuries, and the period was often unsettled, with uprisings and attacks on the town. The Meshchiite Tower reflects those times. It was designed to be lived in and defended at once, with openings from which defenders could fire and rooms for storing weapons. According to local tradition, it sheltered prominent Ottoman townspeople, though that account is best treated as a tradition rather than a documented fact.

Its purpose changed over the years. When the need for defence faded, the tower was turned into a clock tower and became a point of reference for everyone in the town. Visitors sometimes confuse it with the Kurtpashov Tower, another old tower in Vratsa. They are two separate buildings, so it is worth checking which one you are standing in front of.

What to look for

  • The clock at the top of the tower, which is still working and shows how a military building became part of everyday town life.
  • The narrow openings in the thick walls, which were made for firing at attackers from cover.
  • The heavy stone construction and the tall, plain shape of the tower, which make it look more like a fortress than a house.
  • The tower's setting among the streets of the centre, with the rocky Balkan mountains rising behind the city when the sky is clear.

Tips for your visit

  • Allow 15 to 20 minutes to look at the tower, take photos and read about it. It is easy to combine with a longer walk through the centre.
  • Morning and late afternoon give softer light for photographs, and the streets are quieter than at midday.
  • The tower is easy to see from the street. If you want to go inside, check current opening hours and access before you go.
  • Cafes, shops and other historic sites of Vratsa are within walking distance, so you can add the tower to a stroll around the old centre.

See it on a quest

The tower is one stop on Vratsa Liberation and Enlightment, a self-guided walk through the city built around its history. You reach the tower on foot as part of a longer route, the app tells you about the place when you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
