Über Piața Unirii
Piața Unirii (Union Square) is one of the main historic squares of Timisoara, Romania, lined with Baroque and Secession buildings from the 18th to the early 20th century. Its cathedral, palace and colourful corner house make it the best place in the city to see how Timisoara's architecture changed over time.
The story behind it
The square took shape in the 18th century, after the Habsburgs took control of the city and began planning it in an orderly imperial style. The Roman Catholic Cathedral, known locally as the Dome, was built between 1736 and 1774 and gave the new square its Austrian Baroque character.
Later generations added their own layers. In 1885 and 1886 the Baroque Palace received its grand present facade and a third wing, expanded to host Emperor Franz Joseph I during a visit to Timisoara. In 1910 and 1911 architect László Székely built Casa Brück on the corner, bringing in colourful Secession tiles and flowing, organic curves. Three centuries of taste sit side by side in a single open space.
What to look for
- The twin towers and Baroque front of the Roman Catholic Cathedral, which set the tone for the whole square.
- The long, formal facade of the Baroque Palace, a product of the 1885 to 1886 rebuild for the emperor's visit.
- The coloured ceramic tiles and curving lines of Casa Brück, the Secession corner building by László Székely.
- The Holy Trinity column in the middle of the square and the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral facing the Catholic Dome, which together show how many communities shaped the city.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 30 to 45 minutes to walk around, look up at the facades and sit at a cafe, longer if you go into a museum or church.
- Morning light is kind to the pastel facades, and the square is lively and atmospheric in the early evening.
- The Baroque Palace houses an art museum and the churches open to visitors, but check current opening hours before you go.
- The square sits on the central pedestrian route, so Piața Victoriei and the other old town squares are an easy walk away.
