Über Weber Point
Weber Point is a waterfront spot on Center Street in downtown Stockton, California, closely tied to the founding of the city. It is where Charles Maria Weber built his early settlement in the 1840s, and that settlement grew into Stockton. Today it is an open place at the water's edge, easy to reach on foot from the downtown streets.
The story behind it
Stockton began here. In 1847 Charles Maria Weber started building on his land by the water, with houses, stables and space for his livestock. The house he put up is described as the first permanent residence in the San Joaquin Valley. At the start he called the settlement Tuleburg, after the tule reeds that grew along the water.
He later renamed it Stockton, in honour of the U.S. Navy officer Robert F. Stockton. As newcomers arrived around 1849, the settlement grew quickly into a town. Weber stayed in Stockton for the rest of his life and died there in 1881, aged 67. Little at the spot now spells out that story, so it helps to know it before you arrive.
What to look for
- The view over the water at the edge of downtown, where you can picture a single house standing alone among the reeds before the town existed.
- The way the open waterfront sits right beside the streets of the modern city centre, a reminder of how close the town's first buildings were to the water.
- The street signs and the Center Street setting, which tie this spot to the grid of downtown Stockton that grew out from it.
- Any plaque or marker in the area, since information at the site may change over time and is worth reading if it is there.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on 15 to 30 minutes if you are stopping only here, longer if you want to sit by the water and take in the view.
- It is an outdoor spot, so go in daylight, and morning or late afternoon light is the most pleasant for photos and for walking.
- Check current event listings before you come, as the waterfront can be busy or partly closed when something is on.
- Downtown Stockton is compact, so you can easily combine this stop with a wander through the surrounding streets on foot.
See it on a quest
Ghost Hunt in Stockton is a good way to see Weber Point, because you reach it on foot as one stop of a longer route through downtown. The app tells you about the place as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look at the water and the streets more closely than you would on a quick visit. The ghost theme suits a spot with so much history and so little left to see. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group.
