Über Tuida Fortress
Tuida Fortress is an ancient hilltop fortress above Sliven, Bulgaria, where Thracian, Roman, Byzantine and medieval Bulgarian history sit on a single site. Its excavated walls, towers and finds, plus wide views over the city and the mountains behind it, make it one of the best places in Sliven to understand the region's past.
The story behind it
The hill has been worth holding for a very long time. Thracians used the site first, and votive tablets showing the Thracian horseman, a rider deity, are tied to its early story. Later the Romans turned it into a fortified military point, and the Byzantines and medieval Bulgarians kept using and defending it. Excavations have exposed layers from all of these eras.
One of the most interesting finds is an early Christian structure inside the walls, with a basin used for initiation rituals. It suggests that Christianity was practised here in the late Roman or early Byzantine period, within a community that lived under the fortress's protection. Only part of the site has been fully excavated, and the work is ongoing, so the picture keeps growing.
What to look for
- The lapidarium within the grounds gathers carved stones and fragments from the different periods of the fortress, so you can see the layers of history up close.
- The line of the walls and towers shows both round and rectangular towers, each built to strengthen the defence in its own way.
- The remains of the early Christian building, with the outline of its basin, are modest in size but important for dating the settlement.
- The large clay storage vessels called pithoi, with their sloping bottoms, show how the people inside kept supplies for hard times.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about an hour to walk the walls, look at the excavated areas and enjoy the view over Sliven.
- Morning or late afternoon gives softer light for photographs and cooler walking in summer.
- Wear sturdy shoes, because the ground is uneven and the approach climbs the hill.
- Check current opening hours and entry arrangements before you go, as these can change.
See it on a quest

The app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle on the spot, so you look at the stones rather than just walk past them. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no set departure time.
