Über Virginia Museum of History & Culture
The Virginia Museum of History & Culture is Virginia's state history museum, on Boulevard in Richmond's Museum District. It holds a large collection of objects, documents and artworks about the state, from the colonial era to today. It is run by one of the oldest historical societies in the United States, which makes it a good first stop for anyone trying to understand Richmond and Virginia.
The story behind it
The museum grew out of the Virginia Historical Society, founded in 1831 to collect and preserve the records of the state's past. Over the years it gathered manuscripts, portraits, weapons, furniture and everyday objects, and it took the name Virginia Museum of History & Culture in 2013. Its home was built in the early twentieth century as a memorial hall for the Confederacy, and a modern expansion in 2007 added galleries and space for the collections.
The museum also sits in a city with a heavy place in American history. Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War, and the surrounding streets are tied to the politics, the people and the aftermath of that era. Seeing the museum helps put the rest of the city in context.
What to look for
- Notice how the older, early twentieth-century building at the front differs from the modern additions, which show how the institution grew over time.
- Look for the long-term exhibition on Virginia's history, which follows the state's story across several centuries through original objects and documents.
- Pay attention to the personal items in the cases, such as clothing, tools and letters, which often tell you more about daily life than a date in a textbook.
- Step outside and look along Boulevard toward the neighbouring museum buildings, which give the Museum District its cultural feel.
Tips for your visit
- Plan around one to two hours inside if you like to read the displays, and check current opening hours and admission before you go.
- The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is close by, so the two make an easy pairing for a culture-focused day in the Museum District.
- Go earlier in the day if you want quieter galleries, and keep time for a walk through the nearby Fan District streets afterwards.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as the area is best explored on foot and the streets around it have plenty to see.
