Über Minster Church of St Andrew
The Minster Church of St Andrew, also known as St Andrew's Church, is the historic parish church of Plymouth, Devon, and is regarded as the city's mother church. Standing beside the Guildhall in the city centre, it was gutted in the Blitz of 1941 and rebuilt after the war, so it tells the story of Plymouth's endurance as well as its faith.
The story behind it
There has been a church on this spot for many centuries, long before Plymouth grew into a naval city. The building you see today is largely late medieval, built in the 15th century in the Perpendicular Gothic style that is common across the West Country. For hundreds of years it stood at the heart of the town's civic and religious life, and it was given the title of Minster in recognition of its place in the city.
In March 1941, during the bombing of Plymouth, incendiary bombs destroyed the roof and left the church a roofless shell. The story most often told is of the word Resurgam, Latin for I shall rise again, which was placed over the door of the ruined building as a statement of defiance. The church was restored and reopened in the 1950s, and today its stained glass includes work by the artist John Piper.
What to look for
- Look for the word Resurgam near the entrance, a small but powerful reminder of how the church came through the Blitz.
- Study the stone tower and the pale walls from the street, where the medieval fabric stands among the rebuilt city centre.
- Step inside, if it is open, to see the modern stained glass by John Piper, which brings colour to a very light interior.
- Notice how close the church sits to the Guildhall, a pairing that shows how Plymouth's civic and church life were once closely linked.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes for a look around the outside and a quiet visit inside.
- Check current opening hours before you go, as visiting times can vary with services and events. Donations are usually welcome.
- Morning light is kind to the exterior and the surrounding streets are quieter before the shops fill up.
- The Guildhall is next door, and the Barbican and the Hoe are within a pleasant walk, so the church fits easily into a half day in the city centre.
