Über The Tavern
The Tavern, known as The West Hill Tavern, is a pub at 67 Buckingham Place in Brighton, built in 1852 and called the Belle Vue Inn for many years. It sits on a hill-top above the city centre, and its old name, meaning beautiful view, still fits the outlook from this spot.
The story behind it
The building dates from 1852 and began life as the Belle Vue Inn, a name it kept for a very long stretch of its history. Today it trades as The West Hill Tavern, but the earlier name tells you what drew people up the slope in the first place: the position.
Look out to the south-east from the hill and the city spreads below you, with lights glittering after dark. Right in front of you, the large roof of Brighton's railway station dominates the scene, a reminder of how the railway shaped the growth of the town in the Victorian era.
What to look for
- The pub's name and signage, which carry the West Hill Tavern name while the history behind it points back to the Belle Vue Inn.
- The view to the south-east from the hill-top, which is the reason for the original name.
- The wide roof of Brighton station, which stands out clearly in the view in front of you.
- The slope of the streets around Buckingham Place, which shows you how high you have climbed above the centre.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 20 minutes to take in the view and the building from outside, longer if you stop for a drink. Check current opening hours before you plan to go in.
- Late afternoon and early evening are good times to come, when you can watch the city lights begin to appear.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as the walk up to this part of Brighton is on a hill.
- The pub is a short walk from the station and the centre, so it fits easily into a wider walk through the city.
See it on a quest
The Tavern is one stop on Mythic Monster Quests: The Great Gull Of Brighton, a self-guided quest on foot through the area. The app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look at the pub and the view more closely than you would on your own. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no set departure time.
