Über Carroll Creek Linear Park Love Lock Bridge

The Love Lock Bridge is a pedestrian footbridge over Carroll Creek in Carroll Creek Linear Park, in downtown Frederick, Maryland. Locals named it for the padlocks that couples fasten to it, and it is a pleasant place to stop and look at the creek that shaped the town's history.

The story behind it

Carroll Creek is the stream that Frederick grew up beside. Daniel Dulany laid out Fredericktown along its banks in 1745, and the creek was later named for Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence who owned a great deal of land in the county.

For a long time the creek was better known for trouble than for romance. Floods swept through the town centre, including a major one in 1868 and another in October 1976, and water filled shops and cellars along West Patrick Street. The linear park that now surrounds the water grew out of efforts to tame those floods, which is why the creek feels so calm today, with couples leaning on the railing as if it had always been gentle.

What to look for

  • The padlocks clipped to the bridge railing, many of them marked with names or initials, which give the bridge its nickname.
  • The slow, shallow water of Carroll Creek below, which is hard to picture as the cause of the town's worst floods.
  • The landscaped paths and walls of the linear park on both banks, which show how a flood-prone waterway became a public walkway.
  • The buildings along West Patrick Street nearby, where the old floods once reached shops and cellars.

Tips for your visit

  • Plan on 10 to 15 minutes at the bridge itself, longer if you want to stroll the park paths along the creek.
  • Late afternoon and early evening are good for soft light on the water and a quieter walk.
  • The bridge is outdoors and open to walkers, so you can step onto it any time you pass. Check current conditions after heavy rain.
  • Downtown Frederick's streets, shops and restaurants are close by, so the bridge fits easily into a longer walk.

See it on a quest

Ghost Hunt in Frederick, MD brings you to the bridge on foot as one stop of a longer route through the area. The app tells you about each place as you arrive and sets a puzzle in what is in front of you, which suits a creek with a stormy past. One ticket covers the whole group.

Dorothy’s Quest: The Trials of Oz in Carroll Creek Park, Frederick, MD is a lighter way to see the same park. You walk between the stops, hear the story of each spot as you reach it and solve a puzzle on the spot. One ticket covers the whole group.
