Puppy is Jeff Koons's enormous West Highland terrier standing guard outside the Guggenheim in Bilbao, its surface entirely covered in living flowering plants that are replanted twice a year. It was meant to be temporary and the city refused to give it up.

Teatro Arriaga faces the river in Bilbao, a neo-baroque opera house that was rebuilt after fire and flood and remains the city's main stage. The facade is at its best floodlit.

The Fuente del Perro in Bilbao is a stone fountain whose spouts are carved as animal heads that everyone has always insisted look like dogs rather than the lions they were meant to be. The name stuck.

Parque de Doña Casilda Iturrizar is Bilbao's central park, with a pergola, a duck pond and the Fine Arts Museum on its edge. Locals call it the park of the ducks. It is a short walk from the Guggenheim.
