Via Sepulcral Romana is a remarkable archaeological site revealing the burial practices of Roman Barcelona, known in ancient times as Barcino. Dating from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD, this ancient Roman burial road was discovered during construction work and is now preserved in situ, allowing visitors to see over 70 burial sites exactly where they were placed nearly 2,000 years ago. The site displays a variety of burial methods and containers including urns, sarcophagi, and mausoleums, each telling a story about the people who lived and died in Roman Barcelona. The burials are displayed below street level, creating an atmospheric experience of descending into the Roman past. Best of all, Via Sepulcral Romana is completely free to visit.
