Sobre Schloss Pollheim
Schloss Pollheim, also spelled Schloss Polheim, is a castle in the old town of Wels in Upper Austria, at Freiung 14. It began as part of the medieval defences of the town and is tied to the noble Polheim family. Its address still carries a clue to its past, because the name Freiung points to a place with its own legal status.
The story behind it
The castle was part of the fortifications of medieval Wels and is documented as early as 1237. It is linked to the Polheimers, a noble family that came from the area near Grieskirchen in Upper Austria. Over the centuries the building was renovated several times, so what you see today is the result of many layers of change rather than a single moment of construction.
The best clue to its status is the name of the inner courtyard, which is still called Freiung (formerly written Freyung). The word refers to an area that was free of the town's jurisdiction. In other words, the castle stood on its own legal ground inside Wels and answered to its own authority, not to the city.
What to look for
- Look at the name Freiung on the street and the courtyard, which preserves the memory of the castle's separate legal authority.
- Notice how the castle sits among the surrounding town buildings, a reminder that it once belonged to the defensive line of the medieval town.
- Study the walls and rooflines for signs of different building phases, since the castle has been renovated many times.
- Compare the castle with the nearby old town streets, and you will see how a noble residence and a town of merchants and craftsmen lived side by side.
Tips for your visit
- Plan about 15 to 20 minutes for the castle itself, longer if you combine it with a stroll through the old town.
- Check current opening hours and whether the courtyard or any rooms are open to visitors, as access can change.
- Daylight is best for seeing the details of the walls, and early morning is usually quieter.
- The castle is close to the old town centre of Wels, so it is easy to pair with a walk around the main square and the surrounding lanes.
