Sobre Pollheimer Park
Pollheimer Park is a small public park in the old town of Wels, Upper Austria, laid out beside a surviving stretch of the medieval town wall and the Ledererturm. It is worth a stop for the history written into its stones and for the memorial to the Jewish people of Wels who were killed under the Nazi regime.
The story behind it
Like many Central European towns, Wels was once ringed by a defensive wall. According to the route creators, it was built no later than the first half of the 13th century. The first tower or gate to appear in written records was the Ledererturm, documented in 1326, and it is the name you will connect with this corner of town today.
Remnants of the old wall can still be seen here, which makes the park a rare place where you can stand next to the medieval town boundary. Along the wall there is also a memorial to the Jewish residents of Wels who were killed during the Nazi era. The park therefore holds two layers of local history, the defensive past of the town and a later chapter that deserves a quiet moment.
What to look for
- The Ledererturm, the tower whose name appears in records from 1326, which anchors this stretch of the old fortifications.
- The surviving sections of the town wall, where you can see how the old stonework meets the greenery of the park.
- The memorial along the wall for the Jewish people of Wels killed during the Nazi regime, which is worth reading slowly.
- The contrast between the calm of the park and the town streets around it, a good vantage point for imagining where the wall once ran.
Tips for your visit
- Plan on 15 to 30 minutes if you want to look at the wall and tower and spend time at the memorial.
- Daylight is best, since it lets you see the stonework and read the memorial properly.
- The park is a short walk from the centre of Wels, so it combines easily with a stroll through the old town and its main square.
- Treat the memorial with respect, and check current access information if you are visiting at an unusual time of day.
See it on a quest
The quest Fairytale Detective - The mysterious black box of Wels is a good way to see this place. You reach the park on foot as one stop of a longer route through the town, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle right where you stand. That turns a short look at the wall into a proper part of your walk. One ticket covers the whole group, and you can start whenever suits you, with no guide and no set departure time.
