Sobre Palacio de las Dueñas
The Palacio de las Dueñas is a late 15th century palace in the heart of Seville, owned by the House of Alba. It mixes Gothic, Mudéjar and Renaissance styles and is best known as the birthplace of the poet Antonio Machado, who was born here in 1875.
The story behind it
The palace dates from the late 15th century, when Seville was growing rich and many of its grand houses were built. Its architecture reflects the city's layered past: Gothic structure, Moorish-inspired Mudéjar decoration and Renaissance touches sit side by side. The name comes from the neighbouring convent of Santa María de las Dueñas.
Over the centuries it has been home to notable Sevillians. The best known is Antonio Machado, one of Spain's great poets, born here in 1875. The palace belongs to the House of Alba, one of Spain's most famous noble families, and today it holds a large art collection and can be visited as a cultural site.
What to look for
- The street front on Calle Dueñas, where the palace shows its age and its blend of Gothic and Mudéjar details.
- The patios and gardens, a typical Sevillian feature designed to bring shade and calm into the middle of the house.
- The decorative arches and ornamental work that reflect the Moorish influence on local building.
- The sense of how a noble family's townhouse sat among convents and churches, which you can feel by looking at the surrounding streets.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about an hour if you go inside, or ten minutes if you only want to see the exterior and the street.
- Check current opening hours and visiting arrangements before you go, as they can change.
- Morning or late afternoon is more comfortable for walking in Seville, especially in warmer months.
- The palace is close to the Iglesia de Santa Catalina and within walking distance of other old town sights, so it fits easily into a wider stroll.
