Sobre Mobile Carnival Museum
The Mobile Carnival Museum is a museum of Mardi Gras history at 355 Government Street in downtown Mobile, Alabama. It is housed in the Bernstein-Bush House, an Italianate townhouse from 1872, and shows the costumes, crowns and traditions of a festival that Mobile claims as the oldest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States.
The story behind it
Mardi Gras in Mobile goes back to the early 1700s, when French colonists settled the Mobile area and brought the pre-Lenten celebration with them. Over the centuries the festival grew into a season of parades, balls and secret social groups known as mystic societies, each with its own king, queen and court. Mobile people are proud that their Carnival came before the better-known celebration in New Orleans.
The museum tells this story inside a house that is part of the exhibit. The Bernstein-Bush House was built in 1872 and is a fine example of the Italianate style that shaped downtown Mobile in the nineteenth century. Walking through its rooms, you see how a local tradition became a civic ritual that still shapes the city's calendar.
What to look for
- The royal robes and long trains worn by Carnival kings and queens, which show how much craft goes into a single court costume.
- The crowns, scepters and other regalia, which make clear that each society takes its pageantry seriously.
- The Italianate details of the house itself, including its tall proportions and decorative trim, which set it apart from the modern buildings nearby.
- The displays on Mobile's mystic societies and their traditions, which explain why Carnival here is as much a social season as a street party.
Tips for your visit
- Plan about an hour inside. The museum is compact, so it works well as one stop in a longer walk through downtown.
- Check current opening hours and admission before you go, as they can change with the season.
- Visit before or after Carnival season if you want a quieter look at the costumes without the crowds of parade days.
- Downtown Mobile is easy to explore on foot, so combine the museum with a stroll past nearby historic streets and squares.
