Sobre Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception
The Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Mobile, Alabama, standing on Dauphin Street in the heart of downtown. It is a Neoclassical church from the mid-19th century and carries the rank of minor basilica, which makes it one of the most important religious landmarks in the city.
The story behind it
Catholic life in Mobile goes back to the city's early French colonial days, and the Diocese of Mobile was created in 1829. The present cathedral grew out of that young diocese. Construction began in the 1830s and the church was completed around 1850, in the restrained, columned style that was popular for public buildings in the American South at the time.
In the 20th century the church was honored with the title of minor basilica, a designation given by the pope to churches of special historic or spiritual importance. Today it still serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Mobile, so it is a working place of worship as well as a landmark.
What to look for
- Study the front of the building, where the classical proportions and columned entrance show the Neoclassical style of its era.
- Look up at the towers and rooflines and notice how they rise above the surrounding downtown streets.
- If the doors are open to visitors, step inside and take in the height of the nave, the altar area and the stained glass.
- Stand back on the street and compare the cathedral with the nearby historic buildings, which show how much of old Mobile still survives.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 15 to 30 minutes for the exterior and a quiet look inside, longer if you want to read about its history.
- Soft morning or late afternoon light is kind to the facade and makes for better photographs.
- It is an active church, so dress modestly, keep your voice low and avoid walking around during services. Check current opening hours and visiting rules before you go.
- The cathedral sits in the downtown historic core, so shops, cafes and other landmarks on and around Dauphin Street are an easy walk away.
