Sobre Loring Park
Loring Park is a public park and neighborhood just southwest of downtown Minneapolis, built around a small pond and shaded by mature trees. It is one of the city's oldest parks and a favorite spot for locals to walk, picnic and gather for outdoor events. It also works as a gateway between downtown and the arts district nearby.
The story behind it
The park is named after Charles M. Loring, the first president of the Minneapolis park board, who is often called the father of the city's park system. The land was set aside in the 1880s, and the park was known as Central Park before it took Loring's name in 1890. It was one of the first green spaces the young park board shaped, and it grew up alongside the residential streets that now surround it.
Over the decades the park has become a community meeting ground. It hosts large outdoor events through the year, including art fairs and festivals, and the neighborhood around it is one of the most densely populated in the city.
What to look for
- Loring Pond sits at the center of the park, and the paths that circle it give the best views back toward the downtown skyline.
- A statue of Ole Bull, the Norwegian violinist, stands in the park and is a reminder of the Scandinavian roots of many Minneapolis families.
- The mature trees along the walking paths change dramatically with the seasons, from green shade in summer to bright color in autumn.
- The Loring Greenway, a landscaped pedestrian route, leads from the edge of the park toward downtown and shows how the park connects to the city around it.
Tips for your visit
- Plan 30 to 60 minutes for an easy loop around the pond, longer if you want to sit, picnic or watch the people around you.
- Morning and late afternoon are pleasant for walking, when the light is softer and the paths are quieter.
- The Walker Art Center and Sculpture Garden and the Basilica of Saint Mary are both close by, so the park pairs well with a wider walk.
- The park is outdoors and open to the public. If you are visiting for a festival or event, check the current schedule before you go.
See it on a quest
The quest Murder Mystery: Death in the Shadows in Loring Park, Minneapolis brings you to the park on foot as one stop on a longer route through the area. The app tells you about each place as you arrive and sets a puzzle in what is in front of you, so you look at the pond, the paths and the streets more closely than you would on a casual stroll. It follows a murder mystery theme, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join.
