The Crier's Lost Year is a self-guided puzzle walk along the Roman walls and through the medieval Rows. Every clue is on something real: a jubilee clock, a king's tower, a plague-house motto, England's oldest shop front. Every story is true. Find all seven numerals and rebuild the year Chester fell.

Where does the Chester puzzle trail start and finish?
It starts and ends at the Eastgate Clock on Eastgate Street, so you finish where you began. Note that the route is in Chester itself, not Liverpool, so visitors staying in Liverpool will need to make the trip over to Chester first.
How long does the walk take and how far is it?
Allow about an hour and a quarter for roughly 1.7 km on foot. The route passes the Roman Amphitheatre, the Roman Gardens, the Three Old Arches, God's Providence House, the High Cross, the Town Hall and King Charles Tower. You can pause at any point and continue later.
Is it suitable for children?
