Sobre Nelson Monument

The Nelson Monument is a Grade I listed bronze memorial to Admiral Horatio Nelson, standing in the Exchange Flags courtyard behind Liverpool Town Hall in Liverpool. Unveiled in 1813, it honours his naval victories and his death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and it ranks among the city's best-known early public monuments.

The story behind it

Nelson was killed at Trafalgar in 1805, and towns across Britain rushed to honour him. In Liverpool, a busy port whose fortunes depended on shipping, the memorial was paid for by public subscription. The design is credited to Matthew Cotes Wyatt, with the sculpture by Richard Westmacott, and the finished monument was unveiled in 1813.

It is a work of allegory as much as portraiture. Nelson stands at the top with Victory beside him and a figure of Death close at hand, while chained figures around the base are traditionally read as a record of his great naval victories. It is a monument meant to be walked around slowly.

What to look for

  • Look at the figure of Nelson at the top, and then at the allegorical figures of Victory and Death grouped around him.
  • Walk around the base to see the chained bronze figures, which are traditionally linked to Nelson's major victories.
  • Notice the setting: the monument sits in the enclosed Exchange Flags courtyard, with the back of the Town Hall rising behind it.
  • Check the inscriptions and reliefs on the pedestal, which carry the memorial's message in the language of its time.

Tips for your visit

  • Give it 10 to 15 minutes to take in the sculpture properly, longer if you want to photograph each side.
  • It is an outdoor monument, so you view it from the courtyard rather than going inside. Check current access to the courtyard before you go.
  • Morning light is usually kind to the bronze, and the courtyard is calmer outside the busy lunchtime hours.
  • It is close to Liverpool Town Hall, Castle Street and Water Street, so it fits easily into a walk through the city centre toward the waterfront.
