Sobre Statue du Général Faidherbe
The Statue du Général Faidherbe is an equestrian monument on Place Richebé in Lille, honouring the general who was born in the city and led the French Army of the North during the Franco-Prussian War. It is one of the best-known public sculptures in the centre of Lille and a good reference point for a walk through the old town.
The story behind it
Louis Faidherbe was born in Lille in 1818 and made his career as a military officer and colonial administrator. In Lille he is remembered above all for commanding the Army of the North in the winter of 1870-71, when the north of France kept fighting after the defeats elsewhere. That role made him a local hero in the late nineteenth century, and the city chose to honour him with a monument in bronze, the work of the sculptor Antonin Mercié, unveiled in the 1890s.
His legacy is not simple. He also served as governor of Senegal and oversaw French colonial expansion in West Africa, which is why historians and residents today view him with more mixed feelings than the statue's original admirers did. Seeing the monument is a chance to think about how a city chooses its heroes.
What to look for
- The general on horseback is the focus of the monument, and it is worth walking around it to see how the sculptor handled the pose of horse and rider from each side.
- The stone pedestal carries inscriptions and decoration that tell you who is being honoured and why, so take a moment to read them.
- The bronze surface shows the patina of more than a century outdoors, with darker and greener patches where the rain runs.
- The square around the statue shows how Lille mixes brick and stone façades, and looking up from the pedestal gives a good view of the surrounding buildings.
Tips for your visit
- The statue stands in a public square, so you can see it at any time and it costs nothing to visit.
- Ten minutes is plenty for the monument itself. Allow longer if you want to read the inscriptions and photograph it from several angles.
- Morning or late afternoon light is kinder to the bronze than the harsh midday sun, and the square is usually calmer outside rush hours.
- It sits in the heart of the city, so it combines easily with a walk to the Grand Place and the streets of Vieux-Lille. Check current opening hours for any shops, cafes or museums you plan to add.
Explore it on a quest
The statue is much more rewarding as part of a walk than as a single photo stop.
